Dreadball - First Orx WIP!

How a change influence ones creativity, right? As soon as I start selling my Warhammers collections and sweep the shelves clean, making some space for my naval flotillas for Dystopian Wars, to pull my Infinity forces from travelling foams and finally present on a prominent spot, in view… It’s all I needed to find my spark towards painting once again! I know, I know, that my quick and regular pace of posting withered rapidly, but if you follow my main blog you would know the cause – ruined holidays! All in all I shaked the paints, cleaned my wet palette and returned to painting.

And there is plenty to paint as I lately purchased some new naval battlegroups for Dystopian Wars, two starters for Firestorm Armada, a lot of secon-hand miniatures for Infinity and the newest pride in my collection – Dreadball! – a game, that I am most inclined towards at the moment, because the system is great and I am aiming to infect some of my local players with it to start a little league on our own…. And so all the other projects got overshadowed (*But the latest, almost finished Thrullg will surely be done soon!*) as I assembled the models, sprayed on the basecoat and began my work with the greenskins!

Models are… easy. It’s like, half of a compliment and half a criticism, because even if the details aren’t too bad, it is still far away from the sharpness and quality of Games Workshop or great plastics of MalifauX. If that wasn’t enough models have quite a lot of flaws, like big, long mold lines and tiny imprefections, so many that I just didn’t want to clean them all, and so just scraped away the biggest, most obvious ones and quickly began my painting – my aim is to paint them all fast to the level of solid TT, as soon as possible, mostly because painted minis are more magnetic to the people and make infecting players with the new game easier… I began with first of the Orxes, but ‘began’ is not a good word for quite a lot of work already put into its paintjob. I really like the original color scheme Mantic developed, the mixture of red, black and steel, and so I didn’t resign from it, just toning the colors down, desaturating them a bit and adding warm brown as a detail color for leather elements. So far I am quite content with the effect.

Waiting for the camera...

Witam ponownie!

Welcome again! A bit of a longer brake, but after all, it did not mean that I painted nothing at all - here an example of my continuus work above, first of my Plaguebearers in pallid, sickly skin colors. Thrullg for my gatormen army is almost done as well (*tomorrow he will visit the blog*) and to add to that I actually assembled quite a lot of miniatures for both my custom cut deamons army and my Tau cadre! About Nurgle... Painting this model is very pleasurable; Of course it is still a WIP, but it's closer to the end than the beginning - a contrast for the pallid, pinkish and yellowish tones of the sick skin is delivered by a rusty sword, highlighted with a lead pencil and dipped heavily into AK Water Effect for deliciously sickly look and shine. So you can see, I in fact did quite a bit! The pause in the work comes from a different reason - selling of my camera! My faithful Canon had to go, and for now I am waiting for my new one to arrive. And so, the photos above are rather weak, because they are done with cheap digital cam, sadly.

A... I jeszcze sklejony Ripek!

Oh... And the assembled Riptide!

Blindwater Congregation - Basic Colors

Gatormen to osiągnięcie!

I made myself a little brake from painting Thrullg to relax by experimenting with the basic colors for the main units of my gatormens army - Gatormen Posse and Bog-Throgg Ambushers. Of course, this are just the very beginnings, but you can already see in what direction I want to take this units... I really like the standard color scheme promoted by the publisher, so the Bogs stay yellowish-rusty, but the muscles will be undershaded with soft purple washes and highlighted with a creamy, bony color to really make a proper definition of the sculpt. Gatormen is an achievement! It's hardly spectacular, but I managed to achieve such an effect in about 15 minutes, which is a big step for me in speed painting - and since I play to paint at least 15 of them, this method will come in handy - of course lots of glazing with different hues still awaits it, but the scheme is quick and effortless to paint. Thrullg got some lovin' in the end as well, as I added some basic color transistion to his chest, planning to soften the drybrush with washes. It will work just fine.

Blindwater Congregation - Bloody Barnabas

No... To pierwsza w pełni ukończona figurka do mojej nowej armii krokodyli do Hordes - Blindwater Congregation oraz Krwawy Barnaba, główny szef kultu.

So... This is the very first model fully finished for my new army of gatormens for Hordes - Blindwater Congregation and Bloody Barnabas, main chief of the new cult. I am aware, that it's far from perfect, but I still have over fourty miniatures to harness, so I am sure that I will manage to polish my techniques - and hey, it's not entirely bad! I try to paint quite realistically, with subtle shading and limited color palette with natural basing. Sadly, I spent way too much time on it and at last I lost my patience, making the painting of the last details hasty and a bit wild... Well, I also know that if I try to fix it now I will just mess the current, already not the top of the line effect, so for now it land ofn the shelf as finished and I got my brushes on more miniatures! Tomorrow, more stuff!

Blindwater Congregation - Thrullg #1

Warm greetings after two months of silence in the workshop. I can say with some shame that my activation on the painting field was temporary and I quickly lacked in energy for it… Fortunately, as always, I try to push myself into changing it and lately I purchased a whole army of gatormens for the Hordes miniature battle game – Blindwater Congregation. Including all of the models for every of the fraction warlocks it gives me a total of 40 models to paint. It is not a big number by far, but given my history of painting them and my tempo this number is almost mystical and impossible to finish. And therefore I will attempt to achieve it! I start my fun with a model of Thrullg, monstrous looking solo, wizard hunter and fighter of anything magical, a guy, that have a taste for arcane.

Do dzieła więc!

The model in its standard painting scheme is purple and fit the army set in swampy atmosphere quite well, it is also quite interesting to add that it is a good relief from the greens and muddy browns from the rest of the army of gatormens and bog-throgs. So, I decided to keep the purplish colors, but of course with a few extra addition, enriched with variety of different colors when the tissues are looking more raw, more lively as well as giving the spine a bone color to match and add spots in key places, like on the forehead or at the joints of the arms or underbelly of the beast. Of course the model is still heavily a work in progress and require a lot of work to reach the finish line, but for now I consider the hunch to be finished as much as the head. It’s time to paint the arms and chest – I also consider making a bloody strings effect between the facial tentacles, a gory little addition I want to add to most models in this bloodthirsty army. Let’s go to work then!

Faros Thule, Sergeant of Sons of Medusa

Ponacinany, niewyrobiony, sklejany i rozklejany dziesiątki razy... Tak więc nie tworzył on zbyt wdzięcznej powierzchni do malowania. Fortunnie kolejna dziesiątka to nowiutkie modele prosto z wyprasek, więc postaram się je ładnie doszlifować i gładziutko pomalować.

I must say – I am quite content. Sure, I am fully aware that it is still far away form a professional level and that in a few places the paintjob is not too sharp, hastened, that I could easily spend some extra time on sharpening the details or work on the smoothness of the blending on the armor, but with all due honesty the work on this model was a bit of a… Dichotomy? On one side Sons of Medusa color scheme speaks to me and I enjoyed painting this particular marine like a candy, and even now I can’t wait to see a whole 10-people squad with a Rhino painted in this colors, but on the other hand this particular sergeant was my dummy for testing various color schemes for last half year – he was in a horrible state! Cut, not cleaned, glued and snapped back dozens of times… And so he did not provide a smooth surfaces to pain on. Luckily the next ten tacticals are fresh out of the box and I will really clean and polish them up well before painting them smoothly.

Sons of Medusa I picked because of a few reasons – I wanted to collect an ‘official’ chapter, one that have solid contacts with Adeptus Mechanicus, enjoy their techmarines and dreadnaughts and can praise themselves for possession of every possible tech avaliable to the imperium of mankind without a silly straining on the chapter backstory, and in accord to the ‘Badab War’ bookf from Forge World it seems that Sons of Meduza have it all. Sweet! And, to add to that, I am a bit of a hipster when it comes to painting and I want to have a chapter that is not often spotted on the gaming tables.

The model base is simple – a regular debris covered in grey, concrete dust with a few pieces of tore apart and smoked net.  For basic troops I do not intend to construct anything more complicated than that, especially considering that this Marines are going to be played, and not only displayed on the shelf. What is not really too visible on the photos, due to the flash, is the solid use of dry pigment to dust the lower regions of the miniature legs come from travelling in a ruined urbanscape.

Sons of Medusa, First Attempt

Well, now that every important details of organizing the Painting Activation had been taken care off I can finally show my humble beginnings in this little competition and hit two birds with one stone – dust off my workshop and have a solid attempt at finally breaking down the bad path of neverending work in progress. The final goal for my participation in the project will be the finishing of my little Tau army, just big enough to play with her, but for now I want to finish two little projects I already spent, quite productively, two last evening on! If I manage to keep it up I hope to get over my inability to finish a single project and get into painting the fishheads with a free mind!

Co, what am I onto at the moment? Well, an important, bah, essential for me project in form of a regular, tactical Space Marine – the most basic grunt. Why would that be important? Because from over half year now I am troubled with picking a Chapter for myself, one that I would like to paint and would suit the theme I am looking for. I already managed to attempt to pain over fifteen different chapters schemes and pretty much every single one of them got dull for me in halfway of the making, lost it’s ‘bling’ for me. But alas, I finally managed to finish reading ‘Imperial Armour – Badab War’ and I found my answer at last, realization of all my desires in form of Sons of Medusa chapet – they have everything I need: radical, stark color scheme, non-canonical chapter organization and funny, entertaining storyline and history behind them, one that grant them access to the top technology of the Imperium and contacts within Mechanicum. A canon Chapter that fulfill all my needs! O joy! For the moment I pretty much applied the base colors on everything, did some careful washing on metal elements and basic glazing on the armor. Started to work the blending on the feet and the chest piece. I am not sure if I should apply weathering and battle damage… True is that Sons of Medusa fights quite often and with enthusiasm, but on the other hand they have a solid army of servitors and best forges so I assume that their armaments and gear is always in best condition. Must ponder on it yet.

And yes, I am aware of the fact that this Marine look bad – scratched, bent, grazed with cuts on the face and the legs, but that is only because of the fact of him being my experimental marine, only dark powers knows how many times he was stripped of paint to be repainted again, so he look like shit from the very start.

First member of the Fleshrippers!

Wczorajszy wieczór przyniósł zupełnie nieczekiwany rozwój wydarzeń w moim domowym warsztacie – zamiast zabrać się za wykańczanie mojego wybrańca Slaanesha poczułem nagłą potrzebę cięcia, piłowania, sklejania… I w ten oto sposób pojawiła się idea, koncept, natchniony żmudnym przeoraniem różnych tekstów odnośnie taktycznego zastosowania Marines Kakofonii, a mianowicie oddział tychże spaczonych zdrajców przeznaczony do walki wręcz, z odpowiednim aspirującym czempionem i samym lordem chałasu.

Yesterday evening brought up an unexpected turn of events as when I was settling down in my homely little workshop – instead of finishing up the painting of my Slaaneshi Chosen – I felt a sudden urge to hack, cut, saw and glue… And so an idea was born, a concept inspired by thorough plough through internet texts on Noise Marines tactical usage, coming up with the plan to make a squad dedicated to close combat filled with deranged traitors, all with aspiring champion and the Chaos Lord himself. And of course they will ride to battle with class on their custom Rhino, but can’t do everything at once so… for now let me represent you the first member of the band, cryptonym: Johny.

As you can see our Johny is surely a fan of ripping guts – as if it isn’t pointed out clearly enough, instead of an arm I bestowed upon him a brutally looking piece of balde, a bit that I had left from the new box of Talos. I used a standard, loyalist marine body simply because for my painting scheme I prefer a smooth surfaces, without all this decorum of Chaos coming under the brush. However, if the mutation isn’t enough to spell “Chaos” to the bystander, I added a shoulder pad from Kromlech series, Bedlam Fraternity and a Sonic Helmet plus Biohazard backpack from Maxmini, assured that they mix together well and make a proper chaos look for the model. And since bloody meat is somehow a leitmotif for the whole army I stole the rugged clothes with bones, knives and meaty bits from Kroots, fitting in passably.

Chosen of Slaanesh and The Frozen South Navy!

Finally I manager to settle my time management and was able to get into daily painting session, you know, an hour a day do fix the blood flow and relax the mind properly. More so, since the deadline for our local WH40k forum – Gloria Victis - monthly painting contest comes to an end within a week and I still have to finish my first Chaos Chosen of Slaanesh. Without further messing around I got to work! First of all I enjoy the idea of the fleshmetal, a new and popular motive on all newly released Chaos miniatures, and so the cables and the gooey parts around the helmet are painted in metallic with heavy glazing and washing – since it’s still drying up I have to wait before polishing the details any further. I managed to finish a moderately passable eye on the chest and finish up the piece of cloth between his legs, changing the blue into a multi-hued piece of light turquoise, blue and pink, all outlined by almost white trim. Also began working on the daemon-head ornament on the leg, base and some washes for a start.

And to add to that, since it seems I will finally have a chance to play Dystopian Wars more often, bah, maybe even regularly, I got to begin the painting of my flotillas. For a classic start, a try-out of a chosen painting scheme, thinking of blues and browns.
